To keep an axolotl all you require is 5 things
1. Container or tank
2. Tap or fresh rain water
3. Water Conditioner (Dechlorinator)
4. Food
5. A Cave

Axolotls are very easy to look after, they do not require a filter, lighting or any tank decoration. They are very simple creatures and require just your patience and attention.
While they are young they are quite happy living in a plastic container, for one its easy to clean and also means you can give them more attention.
As they grow into adults you can put them into a larger tank but all depends on what you prefer and how much it all costs. An ideal size is 60cm x 30cm x 30cm.
You can add a few plastic plants and somewhere for them to hide but apart from that not much else is required.
As Axolotls do not like a lot of water movement filters and air pumps are a bad idea, the same goes for lights. They do not have any eyelids so bright lights can stress them.
It is much easier to to manually change the water and also suck out any old food or poo they have with a syringe, that way its less stress on them.
Axolotls like to have somewhere to hide so they need a cave to feel safe.
I have bred Axolotls for many years and find manual changing their water the best option, having no filter means no water movement that can stress the creature and changing water all in one go means that they have a new fresh environment.. A 3ft tank can be emptied, cleaned and refilled in about 10 minutes. No filters means no expense only your personal time.
